Redruth Town Council has had a successful year achieving a number of aims in our Climate Action Plan. These include the purchase of a greenhouse and polytunnel for growing plants in 2025, building new planters and working with the Incredible Edible Redruth Group. The Facilities Team have been collecting wild seeds from the footpaths they maintain which will be sown on new sites and trees have been planted in collaboration with Cornish Orchards and Forest for Cornwall. Keep an eye out for a tree giveaway for the community in February 2025!
At the Town Council offices, we are trialling a new cleaning product which is non-toxic and non hazardous to health.
Members of our Facilities and Engagement Teams visited Treleigh School in June to collaborate with their Community Club on the new design for the boat planter at Mount Ambrose.
You might have noticed that the planter had been completely cleared and prepped for new plants. The children planted their design using a range of Margarita Daisies, Petunias, and Chrysanthemums in the beautifully restored boat. Make sure you take a look when passing and see if you can see the hidden message in the planting design.
In August, Buglife Kernow Wyls Conservation Officer Scott joined Redruth Town Council for a bug hunt at East End Park. Scott had a fantastic day and shared that it was lovely to see so many people (children and adults) who were enjoying getting to know a little more about the small things that run the planet.
This Autumn, when out and about in our green spaces, our Facilities Team spotted a hedgehog! They put out the call for a home for this hedgehog and one of the Town Council Admin Team generously donated one. Now this little hedgehog is hibernating in luxury this winter, being the first guest in the RTC Hedgehog Hotel!
Redruth Town Council chairs a community Climate Action Group. This is a collective of local people who are passionate about the community and welcomes new members from all walks of life. No experience of climate change is needed, just a passion for positive change.
The meetings are held every two months in Redruth on a Thursday at 5pm. To join the group, please contact Alice at:
That’s it for 2024, stay tuned in the new year for our next Climate Action update.
