This week, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming four bright students to the Redruth Town Council for an enriching work experience. They were placed in our four departments: Engagement, Administration, Facilities and the Redruth Library. Below you can read all about their journey and what they’ve been up to during their time with us.
Meet Lily working with the Engagement Team
Hello, my name is Lily!
I am coming up to the end of my work experience at Redruth Town Council. Next year I am starting my GCSE exams and it has been great to be able to get the opportunity to get an idea of what working in an office is like, it has meant a lot for the engagement team to show me how they plan and advertise the events they plan.
During the course of this week, I have learnt how to use certain websites, I have sat in multiple meetings, visited Pennoweth school, designed logos and organised shelves. Let’s just say I have learnt a lot! The most interesting thing I looked at this week was the history of Redruth town from its early days. It’s incredible when you realise how much has changed and stayed there since the past. The team I have worked with this week has been incredible and even offered me the chance to write this blog! I have been well-assisted and supported during this week and it was a pleasure to be able to experience this, even though I’m sure they are fed up with me by now!
I wanted to come here for work experience because I wanted to fully establish what I want to do when I’m older. Now I know how everything works in the council, I have a better understanding! With the new information I have found out this week, I can now figure out what career path to take in the future. Thank you to the engagement team for looking after me and the council for welcoming me into such an amazing environment!
Meet Mo working with the Administration Team
Hello, my name is Mo!
This week I have mainly been working with the admin team doing many different things some more exciting than others. It has been very interesting to see the inner workings of the council and what happens behind the scenes it has also taught me some basic finance skills and what interviewing is like from the other side.
I was also given the opportunity to work with the library and do some face painting during the library ‘Rhyme time’ and sit in on a council meeting and attempt to write minutes as well as Jo does and also seeing how complicated it is to input invoices into the software which Helen seems to do so easily. I find it very intriguing how much work and effort goes into jobs I barely knew existed until a few days ago. I want to thank Jo and the Admin team for being so welcoming and friendly especially when I was a bit slow to pick some things up. So thank you for this opportunity to work with such a fun team
Meet Kaelyn working with the Redruth Library Team
Hello, my name is Kaelyn!
This week, I have had the chance to work with the library assistant team! I have seen how volunteers at the front desk interact with the public, and have been shown how the systems work to handle item requests and deliveries. Doing my work experience here has encouraged me to be a little more extroverted than I normally would be, speaking with members of the public and meeting a whole new team of staff. Because of this, I am considering volunteering over the summer (and possibly bringing a friend along)!
My favourite part of this week has probably been hearing about all the exciting new plans for the library, such as making it more of an appealing space for younger people. I have also really enjoyed being able to keep myself busy doing lots of different tasks, and exploring what it’s like to work here. I am now considering information services as a branch I would like to work in! Thank you for having me for work experience, and I can’t wait to be here again, whether it be visiting the library for its services, or volunteering over the summer!
Meet Alfie working with the Facilities Team
Hello, my name is Alfie!
Alfie had great fun working with our Facilities Team. Because he was working outside every day, he wasn’t able to provide a lengthy, written account of his week, however, he did stop in and was able to provide us with a quote:
“I really liked cleaning Redruth,” – Alfie
As well as some kind words from the team, George, Chris and Jason:
“Alfie has got on really well and fitted in with us all. He’s always been smiling and been cheerful.”
As this week comes to an end, we’re grateful for the energy and ideas the students brought to the Redruth Town Council. Their contributions have been truly inspiring. We’re already looking forward to next year and hope to welcome another four students eager to learn and make a difference.
