On the 25th August Redruth Town Council celebrated its first stand-alone Redruth Fun Day.
There were lots of stalls to browse throughout the day, with food stalls offering everything from delicious sweet-treats including brownies and rolled ice cream, to savoury pizzas and vegan crepes. The Redruth based charities and CICs had a great time interacting with their community; some using this opportunity to help raise funds for future events for residents to enjoy.
Crowds gathered on the green with their picnic rugs, ready to enjoy a wide array of displays from local talent. West Coast Academy wowed with cheerleading and parkour. Redruth Charity Trust showcased a wide range of sports including judo, football and majorettes. There was also dog show, ran by the K9 Crusaders for the many furry friends that attended.
Music was provided by the Redruth Town Band, who played some familiar favourites. Redruth Record Club’s Rolling Roadshow then took to the Bandstand to provide tunes to get the park dancing.
Deputy Town Mayor Cllr Alison Biscoe said “A big thank you must go out to all the stall holders who attended Sunday’s event and another big thank you to all the young people for entertaining us all with exciting visual displays throughout the day. Not even the two rain showers could put a dampener on the atmosphere and enjoyment that was had by all of us that attended.”
Redruth Town Council Town Clerk Charlotte Caldwell said “I hope those who attended felt that our Fun Day was true to its title in all aspects, everyone I met seemed to be really enjoying their time in the park! We hope the range of activities on offer suited all ages and interests and I would like to thank all those who came along and gave their time, energy and dedication to enable others to have fun. We hope that next year, it is an even bigger event so look out in our calendar of events in due course and save the date.”
There isn’t long to wait until the Redruth International Mining and Pasty Festival taking place over Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September. This year’s event will include a celebration of the 200th anniversary of Cornish mine workers emigrating from Redruth to Real Del Monte in Mexico.
There will be lots of exciting things happening over the weekend, including the smoking of the engine house stacks at Wheal Uny, live music and entertainment and an array of Pasty themed competitions to look forward to.
